One of the many great things about buying music on wax is that very often in the process of looking for a particular song you stumble across great music in the form of b-sides or “those other songs” that happen to be on the same sampler that contains the song you were looking for. When this happens it’s friggin SWEET. A good example of this phenomenon happened to me earlier this week when I put in an order to Juno. As I was looking for records to round out my order I stumbled across an older sampler from the Munich label Permanent Vacation. When I got the record in I was thrilled to find that one of the tracks was a song that had come to my attention over a year ago on a Beyond the Wizards Sleeve Podcast that was released in March of 2008. This podcast is still available and I strongly recommend you check it out – here is the LINK.

To be honest, when I first heard this song I thought that it must be some rare, out of print track from the 60s that Erol Alkan or Richard Norris had dug up and would be nearly impossible for common folks like myself to come across, so I didn’t take the time to look it up. You can imagine my surprise when it fell into my lap over a year later. As you listen to the track I’m sure you will understand how the psychedelic keys, jangly tambourines, and languid vocals led me to believe this track must have been a mainstay on Timothy Leary’s HiFI system in ‘68.

‘Losing the Will to Survive’, as well as 11 other terrific reworks are conveniently packaged on theBeyond The Wizard’s Sleeve ‘Re-Animations, Vol 1.’ compilation, available on I-Tunes and any record store worth it’s salt. Check it out!
